Wednesday - 3rd Grade

02/08/17
Our Galleons hit the Doldrums today! No wind for weeks! We are stuck on our ship in desperate need of wind and supplies! We simulated this by sitting for 20 minutes without moving off our ships or talking while our shipmates wrote in the Ship's Log. We started to feel a slight breeze, but still in desperate need of supplies had to send out a Message in a Bottle! I hope we get help soon!

02/01/17
We are continuing our Galleon unit. Today, we learned about Sea Shanties that they crews would sing while working. The ships wrote and performed their own Sea Shanty. We did more work with longitude and latitude with a fast paced map challenge. The weather around our ships is getting bad so we had an Emergency Map Making session.

01/11/17

Today, we began our Galleon unit. The students are shipmates on 16th Galleon ships heading for treasures of the New World. We have the Spanish ship Spainion, the English ship Penquod, and the privateer ship Black Pearl.  The ships will race to the New World by solving problems, answering historical questions and fate challenges. We will keep you updated on their progress!

12/20/16
Today, we had a Holiday STEM Challenge! We made Snowball Cannons and measured the distance they could shoot our snowballs (aka mini marshmallows).

11/16/16
Today was our Thanksgiving STEM Day! First, we had to get our pilgrims from the Old World to the New World. We built and tested Mini Mayflower boats. Our second challenge was to build a warm, dry, and safe shelter that would protect our pilgrims from wind (a hairdryer) and rain (a squirt bottle).

11/09/16
Today, we continued our Election Unit: Who Will Win? We began with counting our class votes from last week. Hillary won with 7 votes. Then, we colored our electoral college map from the 2016 election. We researched past presidents and their roles and responsibilities. After lunch, we each got to be President For a Day! We appointed a cabinet, made our daily agenda, and decided which key issue to tackle first! We also had to say goodbye to one of our friends today with smilely face donuts! He will be missed and we wish him the best!

10/26/16
Today, was our Fall S.T.E.A.M Day. First, we started with Halloween Puns. Then, we took our Magical Potions Test. We had to chose between Di hydrogen Monoxide or Acetic Acid. Then, we added the pigmentation agent and stirred.  Lastly, we add Sodium Bicarbonate. If our potion had a reaction, then we are officially wizards! We learned that acids and bases try to neutralize each other and produce carbon dioxide.  Check it out! Then, we read Dem Bones, labeled bones, and make our own paper plate skeleton.
