Friday - 1st Grade

2/17/17
Today was our Valentine S.T.E.A.M. Day! Thank you for all of the candy donations for our experiments! First, we used a balance to see what classroom items were lighter, equal to, and heavier than 100 candy hearts. Next, we did sink or float with candy hearts and put them in water, soda, and vinegar. The hearts sank in water and vinegar. We also learned that the carbonation from the soda helped the hearts float. Then, we used a cup of candy hearts to make a graph and answer questions about our candy graphs. After that, we did a chocolate kiss experiment with heat energy. We compared the melting kiss in an open hand to a closed hand. Check out our lab report that came home! After lunch, we had a Minute to Win It candy challenge. Lastly, we measured our hug with hearts!

1/27/17
Today in our Penguin Unit we focused on Antarctica and Temperature. We made an Antarctic Fact Tracker and learned about the Race to the South Pole between Amundsen and Scott. We also did 2 different experiments with Temperature and Thermometers. We also worked on making realistic predictions.  In the first experiment, each group chose a spot to put their ice cube and see how long it took to melt and then measured the temperature of the melted cube (water). The second experiment was to predict and measure water that is at cold, room, and hot temperature.

1/13/17
We are continuing our Penguin and Antarctic unit.  We completed our Penguins Research on different types of Penguins and our Penguin glyph. We also answered questions about penguins and went on a penguin hunt where we colored the heads of different penguins in order to tell them apart.  We also completed a penguin escape maze and ABC order for birds starting with P.  We are also reading the novel Mr. Popper's Penguins.

11/18/16
Today, was our Thanksgiving Fun Day! We started with some dictionary skills like ABC Order and Using Guide Words for Thanksgiving Words.  We also read Amelia Bedelia Talks Turkey and learned about Idioms. We illustrated two idioms of our choice.  Then, we helped Tom Turkey come up with some excuses why Farmer Brown should not eat him this Thanksgiving. In case those don't work, We made a disguise for Tom! The We played Thanksgiving Scattergories. We didn't finish so maybe you can play at home!  After lunch, we had Cranberry Science Stations like:  Estimating, Sink or Float, and Can Cranberries Bounce? We finished the day with a Mystery Picture.

10/28/16
We had our Fall S.T.E.A.M day! First, we made a Little Orange House by following directions. It turned out to be a Jack-o-Lantern! Then, we did the candy tower challenge! We used candy corn, candy pumpkins and toothpicks to build the tallest tower. 6.5 inches was the tallest! Check out the pictures! Next, we read One Halloween Night and made Monster Puppets. Lastly, we read Time For Kids: Pumpkin Edition and learned about the pumpkin life cycle. It was pretty close to the corn plant life cycle!

10/14/17
We had an amazing trip to the Corn Maze today! Check out some of our pictures below.

09/30/16
Fun's a Popping in Gifted! One of our students brought in real Iowa corn for us to see and feel! She also brought in awesome pictures of her Grandfather's farm. We loved feeling the real husks and tassels.  We continued our corn investigation by reading The Popcorn Book by Tomie de Paola. Then, we completed a Popcorn Jeopardy with what we learned from the book. After that, we "Discovered Popcorn" with 20 questions about popcorn by touching, observing, and thinking all about popcorn. After lunch, we completed Science is Popping Day 1. First, we did sink or float with popcorn. We learned that kernels sink and popped corn floats. We also added soda to the water and discovered that the bubbles could help the kernel float. We watched it bob up and down! Next, we tested the Popcorn Throw: Kernel versus Popped Corn. We had to measure the results of each throw. The kernel went 230 inches and the popped corn traveled 111 inches. Lastly, we began an experiment called Popcorn Push-ups. We filled a glass jar with kernels and water. We covered it with foil and made our predictions. We will see if the kernels push the lid off on Monday!

09/23/16
We had an awesome day today learning about Corn to kick-off our Fun's a Popping unit! We started the day with our waker upper "B words"  and our logic problem.  We made a class K (What I already know) W (What I Want to Learn) L (What I learned) about Corn. We read the article Hog Wild About Corn together to help us fill in our KWL chart.  We learned that corn is actually a type of Grass! Then, we read ingredient labels on food contained to see what type of corn products are used in our foods like salad dressing, cake mix, and even yogurt! Next, we did a word scramble puzzle with types of corn names from Strawberry to Fiesta to Ruby Queen.  After that, we watched a video on the life cycle of corn and made our own life cycle.  We also created our own Corn Man Glyphs based on our popcorn preferences and graphed the class results.  Lastly, we did a science investigation on a cornstarch and water mixture. We determined that even though it was sticky and hard, the mixture was a liquid because it always took the shape of its container.

09/09/16

What a great first day at Gifted! To start the day, we played a get to know you game, set-up, and decorated our folders. Next, we did our T is for Thinking Waker Upper and learned new "A" words like awkward and age.  Next, we did our critical thinking logic problem. After Logic, we did our Flag Math. We worked on patterns, counting, measuring and word problems all using "Old Glory."  Then, we practiced grid coordinates to make a Mystery Picture. Ask me what my mystery picture turned out to be! Last, we read "It Looked Like Spilt Milk." It's about finding shapes in things like spilt milk and clouds. Then we made our own! Check them out!
